Affordable auction management and image hosting solutions @ inkfrogbrief history of the feed/meal sackduring the 1800's food was stored in barrels, tin and wood containers.
The containers would rust/leak adn harm the food. Cloth sacks were too weak to hold heavy bags of feed. But, in 1846 when the sewing machine was invented, strong double seams could be made to canvas material that would hold up to 50 or 100 lbs of feed-the birth of the feed sack! Feed sacks were first used to hold flour, sugar, meal, grain, salt, and feed straight from the mills to the farmer/consumer. Each bag was stamped with a farmer's mark so that the sack was reusable and identifiable and then filled up again and again at the mill. In the late 1800's, mills in the north eastern usa began weaving inexpensive cotton fabric into feed sacks. Each was a plain white bag with the barrel size imprinted on the outside. Because the fabric aws cotton, farm wives began using the sacks for cloth, diapers, gown, etc. Manufacturers saw an opportunity to attract more customers to their particular brand of feed/food by offering the sacks in oslid colors. By 1925 feed sacks in various designs adn patterns were widely available. Ladies would seek out the same print (3 bags could make a dress) or prints of a certain color to make whatever she needed. By 1937, president roosevelt standardized the feed sack sizes into a 50lb sack measured 34x38 and a 100 lb sack measured 39x46. Feed sacks became so popular, that some of them came with patterns and instructions-even instructions for using the pull string on top of the bag for knitting and crocheting. By 1942 women and children from all economic levels had feed sack clothing, linens, toys, curtains. Etc. But, all great things seam ot come to an end! After wwii, technological invented heavy paper bags and plastic containers. It was more cost effective to produce a paper bag. Thus, by 1948 the cloth bag was no more!
